This investment was part of a collaborative R&D program of tree crop-specific projects established to deliver step-change orchard system intensification knowledge, understanding and technical advancements to the almond industry.
This investment was to advance almond industry knowledge on high-density systems, rootstock and cultivar performance, and canopy management. Trials showed that combinations like ‘Vela’ on Rootpac 40 or Controller 6 rootstocks excelled in yield and consistency, while upright, compact architectures facilitated closer planting. Intensive systems delivered early, high yields (up to 5.5 t/ha), but economic viability depends on cultivar price parity, machinery adaptation, and long-term management. Growers now have practical data and demonstration sites to guide replanting and intensification decisions, with clear recommendations for matching genetics, density, and management to local conditions.
National Tree Crop Intensification in Horticulture (AS18000) was funded through Hort Innovation Frontiers with co-investment from Queensland Department of Primary Industries, Queensland Alliance for Agriculture and Food Innovation, the Western Australia Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, Peirson Memorial Trust and contributions from the Australian Government.
