What is it all about?
This project is improving the overall quality of Australian cherries by developing a minimum quality standard for the industry and supporting growers to meet it.
The project team will bring industry stakeholders together to define what good eating quality looks like, with a focus on consistency for consumers in both domestic and export markets.
The project combines industry consultation, consumer taste testing and ongoing supply chain monitoring. Cherries will be tested for key quality traits such as sweetness, firmness, colour and defects. Consumer panels will link these measurements to eating satisfaction, helping the industry set practical thresholds. Monitoring will then track fruit quality at wholesale markets and retail, providing feedback on how well the standard is being met and where improvements are needed.
Growers and supply chain partners will receive tools, guidance and data to support adoption of the standard. Outputs include a minimum quality standard, regular industry quality reports, individual performance feedback, and updated educational materials.
Over time, this work is expected to lift consistency, improve consumer confidence, and strengthen demand and reputation for Australian cherries.
