What was it all about?
This investment strengthened food safety capability across the fresh produce industry in Australia and New Zealand by developing practical, science-based resources to help growers and supply chain businesses manage food safety risks, improve preparedness and meet changing regulatory requirements.
Key outputs included the updated Fundamental Guidelines for Fresh Produce Food Safety, Quick Guides translated into multiple languages, Food Safety Essential Guides, a food safety help desk, webinars, podcasts and a growing Community of Practice that connected industry, researchers, regulators and service providers.
The project reviewed more than 400 existing food safety resources, identified gaps in available guidance and surveyed industry stakeholders to better understand food safety needs. It delivered 184 engagement and outreach activities across Australia and New Zealand, established a Community of Practice that grew to 95 members, and provided practical support through training, extension, communications and collaborative networks. Resources were designed to be accessible for growers, including small businesses and those from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
The project addressed increasing food safety expectations, the rollout of Primary Production and Processing Standards, and the challenge of fragmented and often highly technical food safety information. Industry feedback identified a need for practical, easy-to-access guidance, stronger collaboration and improved support to help businesses manage food safety requirements.
The project will help growers and the wider fresh produce industry improve food safety knowledge, preparedness and risk management. The guidelines, tools, training resources and industry networks developed through the project will support ongoing adoption of best practice, strengthen industry readiness for regulatory change and help maintain consumer confidence in fresh produce.
