National tree crop intensification program (AS18000) – Mango

This investment is part of a collaborative R&D program of tree crop-specific projects established to deliver step-change orchard system intensification knowledge, understanding and technical advancements to the mango industry.
Mango showed the greatest adaptability to intensification, with high-density and trellised systems delivering up to 310% yield increases over traditional systems. The project identified promising rootstocks and canopy management strategies, and demonstrated that certain varieties (e.g., ‘Keitt’) are particularly well-suited to intensive systems. Economic modelling confirmed that, despite higher establishment costs, intensified orchards achieve rapid positive cash flow and long-term profitability. Growers benefited from practical manuals, field days, and videos, supporting confident adoption of advanced systems.
National Tree Crop Intensification in Horticulture (AS18000) was funded through Hort Innovation Frontiers with co-investment from Queensland Department of Primary Industries, Queensland Alliance for Agriculture and Food Innovation, the Western Australia Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, Peirson Memorial Trust and contributions from the Australian Government.
