Mechanisation R&D and demonstration for the Australian potato industry (PT25003)

This project will identify and evaluate emerging mechanisation, automation and robotics technologies that could help reduce labour dependence and improve efficiency across potato production, harvesting, grading and postharvest operations.
Working closely with growers, processors and equipment suppliers, the project will identify priority technology opportunities and conduct independent evaluations of promising systems on 6–10 commercial farms across Tasmania, Victoria and South Australia. Technologies may include advanced harvesters, optical grading systems, autonomous machinery, precision planting equipment, variable-rate technologies and AI-enabled crop monitoring and spraying systems.
Growers will be able to see the equipment operating under Australian conditions through on-farm demonstrations and field days. Training and extension activities aligned with PotatoLink will help growers understand how the technologies perform and what may be required to integrate them into their businesses.
Key outputs will include an international technology scan and national consultation report, grower case studies, practical integration guides, factsheets, webinars and independent economic analyses to support informed investment decisions.
