Evaluating mechanical harvesting solutions for the Australian melon industry (VM25005)
Delivery Partner: Australian Melon Association
This project is investigating the feasibility of mechanical harvesting for the Australian melon industry in response to ongoing labour shortages, rising input costs and limited on shore mechanisation options. It aims to identify whether existing global harvesting technologies can be adapted to Australian growing systems and commercial conditions.
The project will undertake a structured assessment of available mechanical harvesting systems, including a global scan of technologies and direct engagement with overseas providers. Key activities include in country visits by technology developers, a grower study tour to the United States, and on ground evaluations of harvesting equipment. These activities allow growers and industry representatives to observe technologies in operation and assess their suitability for Australian melon production.
The project is focusing on technical performance, economic viability and logistical considerations, including labour efficiency, cost implications and practical implementation pathways. Grower input is central to the evaluation process to ensure findings are relevant and grounded in commercial reality.
Outputs will include evaluation reports, study tour findings, industry presentations and summaries for dissemination. The project will deliver evidence based recommendations to support informed decision making, reduce investment risk and guide future adoption of mechanical harvesting solutions within the Australian melon industry.
