Board and Executive Team

Selwyn Snell

Selwyn is the current Chair of Hort Innovation and Barawyn Pty Ltd.

With more than 40 years of experience at senior executive and CEO level in agriculture, biotech and life sciences industries, Selwyn has served on numerous listed, unlisted and not-for-profit companies both internationally and domestically.

Selwyn has served as the former chairman of the Council of Rural Research and Development Corporations, non-executive Director of Plant Health Australia Ltd, and non-executive Director of the APVMA, among other roles.

Selwyn is a fellow of the Australian Institute of Management and a graduate member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Dr Mary Corbett
Deputy Chair

Mary has over 22 years’ experience as a Director, spanning a diverse range of industries from cotton growing to public health, and has a strong focus on research and development and corporate governance.

She is currently a Director of DairyBio, a joint venture between Dairy Australia and the Victorian Government and has recently completed tenures as Chair of the Cotton Research & Development Corporation, Chair of the West Moreton Hospital and Health Services and a Board member of Wound Management Innovation CRC. She was previously Deputy Chair of Southbank Institute of Technology and Deputy Chair of the Australian Agriculture College Corporation.

She has significant experience of Board committees including remuneration, intellectual property, finance, and audit.

Mary has chaired and been a member of various Board selection panels.

She is the Managing Director of Australian Business Class, which specialises in providing Board and senior executive training and facilitation. Mary’s expertise lies in the areas of leadership, developing emotional intelligence and building personal and organisational resilience.

Mary has a BSc in Applied Biology (Hons Biochemistry) and a PhD in Clinical Physiology, and is Adjunct Professor with University of Queensland Faculties of Health and Behavioural Sciences and Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.






Julie Bird

Julie has a broad background in the Australian horticulture industry, spanning various roles over the past 25 years.

She has extensive experience across the supply chain, encompassing work in a range of horticulture commodities including almonds, apples and pears, citrus, cherries, summerfruit and nuts. With both commercial and industry experience, Julie’s key skills include stakeholder management, strategic planning, marketing and communications.

Julie is an experienced Non-Executive Director in the Agribusiness sector, and her governance and compliance experience is complemented by strong financial and business management skills.

Julie is current Owner/Manager of Say It With Flowers, a large retail floristry business based in Malvern, Victoria employing more than 30 staff. She is also Non-Executive Director of United Almonds Limited, an unlisted public company managing more than 1,000 hectares of almond orchards situated at Piangil, Victoria. Previously, Julie was Non-Executive Director/Deputy Chair of Plant Health Australia, CEO of the Almond Board of Australia and Non-Executive Director of the Australian Nut Industry Council. Julie has served as Independent Chair of the Apple and Pear Industry Advisory Committee and the South Australian Apiary Industry Advisory Group.

Julie has significant experience on Board committees including remuneration, finance, audit and risk. She has also been a member of various Board selection panels. Julie has wide experience working in all aspects of primary production, including a management role with Quality Fruit Marketing marketers of stonefruit to domestic and international markets, and operating a management consultancy business, servicing the agribusiness sector in strategic planning and risk management.

Julie has a Bachelor of Teaching degree, is a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, and has an MBA (Executive) qualification focused in marketing, finance, business strategy and leadership.

Professor Robert Clark AM

Rob is a current Director of Hort Innovation and Emeritus Professor of Agricultural Science at the University of Tasmania.

Rob is also a horticultural producer, as owner and Managing Partner of Lanoma Estate, a 500ha intensive agricultural property in the Derwent Valley Tasmania. Rob was a Foundation Director of the Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture Research, and his prior appointments also include Deputy Chair of Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation, a member of the National Research and Development Council, and a member of the Queensland Alliance for Agriculture and Food Innovation Advisory Board, among others.

Susan Finger

Mrs Finger was appointed a Director of Hort Innovation at its registration by the Minister for Agriculture.

Mrs Finger is a partner in a family-owned business based in the Yarra Valley, Victoria, which grows, stores and packs apples. She has a successful history in farmer and industry representative

organisations. She currently serves on the Victorian Farmers Federation (VFF) Farm Business and the VFF Workplace Relation Committees, in addition to being an executive member of the VFF Industrial Association. She previously was a Board member of the VFF and is the immediate past president of the VFF Horticulture Group.

Mrs Finger holds a Bachelor of Business and is a member of Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Paul Harker

Paul has more than 20 years of retail experience spanning store operations, supply chain, and buying and marketing, including four years heading up the fresh produce buying team of one of Australia’s largest retailers. Through his professional background, Paul has an extensive understanding of retail, including strategy, operations, logistics, technology, and consumer marketing coupled with an extensive knowledge of the produce supply and value chain.

Paul is a former non-executive Director of PMA A-NZ, and is currently the Director and owner of Highland Farms Pty Ltd, a small horticultural operation in the central tablelands of NSW.

Stephen Lynch

Mr Lynch was elected as a Director of Hort Innovation by members at the Annual General Meeting on 27 November 2015.

Mr Lynch has over 35 years’ experience in Australian and international agribusiness, with much of the last 20 years working in Australian horticulture.

Stephen was previously a Director of the Almond Board of Australia (2003–2009), Chairman for three of those years, and a Board Member of the Australian Nut Industry Council (ANIC). He was also involved in the establishment of Pollination Australia.

Mr Lynch previously held a number of company directorships and senior management roles, managing horticulture operations and investments from 1999 to 2012.

Mr Lynch’s horticulture experience covers strategy, investment, project management and business development assessment/advice for industries including almond, citrus, stonefruit, table grape, avocado, mango, and some vegetable.

Jenny Margetts

Jenny has worked in the horticultural industry for more than 25 years in a range of roles across the supply chain. She has a background in agronomy, R&D management, industry planning and business management, and holds qualifications in applied science (horticulture technology), business and marketing. Jenny has a wealth of experience from both an industry and commercial perspective, and for the past 12 years Jenny has managed her own consulting business.

Peter Wauchope

Peter is a current Director of Hort Innovation, and current Chair of the Hort Innovation Trade Assessments Panel. He is also CEO of Center West Exports, a vertically integrated carrot growing, packing and marketing enterprise and recognised as one of Australia’s leading carrot producers and exporters, with customers in over 17 countries.

Peter has enjoyed more than 30-years-experience in marketing fresh produce overseas and has travelled extensively throughout Asia, Middle East, Europe and the USA visiting and servicing customers, and increasing market access for Australian fresh produce. Originally from the Manjimup district of Western Australia, Peter’s family still grow stone fruit and avocados in the district.

Matt Brand
Chief Executive Officer

Matt Brand brings a wealth of knowledge and experience, most recently from his previous role as the long-term CEO of NSW Farmers, Australia’s largest state farmer organisation.

In this role, Matt drove a strategic, structural and cultural change agenda within NSW Farmers. He has a solid track record of strong agricultural organisational leadership and driving a strategic change agenda.

He has also held senior marketing, commercial and sponsorship roles in the fast-moving consumer goods industry and professional sport.

Matt is a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
