Australia Fresh Collaboration Market Development Program - Almonds (AM15007)
What was it all about?
As part of the Hort Frontiers Asian Markets Fund, this investment ran from 2016 to 2019 to promote the growth of Australian almond export markets. Specifically, by continuing the growth of exports to established and emerging markets, and to leverage the opportunities presented to Australian Almonds by the Free Trade Agreements signed between Australia and Japan, Korea, and China. With domestic production forecast to grow significantly in the next ten years, it is essential for the almond industry to expand its international markets.
The project team’s activities included attendance at trade exhibitions, outbound market visits, and on-going trade communication, such as:
- Exhibiting at the Gulfoods Trade Exhibition, held annually in Dubai in 2017, 2018 and 2019. This event attracts key Indian almond customers as well as customers from the Middle East and African markets.
- Participation in multiple trade exhibitions to China, namely SIAL China in 2017, 2018 and 2019; Asia Fruit Logistica in 2016 and 2017; and the China Tree Nut Conference in 2017 and 2018.
- Participation in Foodex 2017, 2018, 2019 in Tokyo to build relationships with Japanese nut buyers and to grow understanding of the issues that relate to the expansion of Australian almonds into the Japanese market. It was also important to communicate the advantages of the Japanese-Australian Free Trade Agreement with potential customers.
This program provided the structure to establish and grow business relationships, communicate the strengths and opportunities of the Australian almond industry, and position exporters to take advantage of Australia’s Free Trade Agreements and consequent tariff advantages.
