Phase 1: Scoping workshop - Real time decision support system for remote monitoring of crops (AS20006)

Key research provider: Western Sydney University
Publication date: Monday, December 13, 2021

What was it all about?

In 2021, this short project examined key challenges affecting horticulture industries to inform a future investment into developing a real-time decision support system for remote monitoring of crops. Through a scoping workshop, grower surveys and 1:1 grower interviews, various problems facing horticulture growers were mapped out, discussed and prioritised.

Specific project activities included:

  • Assessing technology gaps within industry and identifying ways to bridge these gaps.
  • Understanding how data and smart farm technologies impact on-farm decision making.
  • Exploring the role and potential impact of integrating smart monitoring tools for improved decision making.
  • Reviewing the opportunities and likely impediments for the development and implementation of decision support systems into Australia’s horticulture industry.

The recommendations from this project will be tested in a second phase of the project that is currently undergoing contracting.
