Citrus health and nutrition literature review (CT20004)

Key research provider: Food Bytes
Publication date: Thursday, October 20, 2022

What was it all about?

Running from 2021 to 2022, this short investment reviewed the current evidence-based health benefits of Australian citrus (including oranges, orange juice, mandarins, grapefruit, lemons and limes) and communicated the compelling nutrition and health key messages about Australian citrus.

The project delivered:

  • A report presenting scientific findings in a consumer-friendly manner which can be used as an educational tool by industry, health professionals and for future marketing campaigns.
  • New compelling key messages on the health and nutritional benefits of consuming Australian citrus products.
  • Ensured claims and key messages comply with the Australian New Zealand Food Standards Code and Australian Consumer law (ACL).
  • Identified gaps in existing research and proposed recommendations for future research investment based on health benefits that citrus fruits can offer.

The information compiled will be used to inform and develop a health and nutritional educational program to provide industry and consumers with up-to-date information about the benefits of consuming Australian citrus products.
