Developing a capability-based horticulture leadership strategy (HA24003)
What is it all about?
This project is driving cultural change in the horticulture sector by prioritising leadership development through non-technical, people-centered initiatives. By establishing clear leadership pathways, the project is building a strong, future-ready leadership foundation for the industry beyond 2030. This proactive approach will help unify the horticulture sector in addressing capability gaps and ensure a sustainable pipeline of skilled leaders.
Challenge
The horticulture industry is facing rapid change, influenced by megatrends, evolving consumer demands, and the ongoing need to maintain social license. To navigate these challenges effectively, the industry requires leaders who are adaptive, resilient, and forward-thinking.
The complexity of the sector, with 37 Peak Industry Bodies (PIBs) and over 180 industry groups at varying stages of leadership development, presents a key challenge. Identifying existing leadership capabilities, understanding gaps, and determining future needs are crucial steps in building a unified, industry-wide leadership framework.
Response
To address these challenges, the project will deliver a structured leadership capability strategy that ensures continuous supply of skilled individuals who are prepared for leadership roles across the horticulture industry- both within and beyond the farm gate.
A leadership capability analysis will be conducted to establish a clear roadmap for the sector’s leadership development, identifying current strengths, gaps, and future opportunities. This roadmap will act as a guide for key stakeholders, assisting them in shaping leadership and sustainability workplans within their respective industry groups.
A Project Reference Group will provide strategic direction, industry validation, and co-design support to ensure meaningful outcomes. The project will incorporate insights from previous leadership initiatives, industry surveys, and interviews with key stakeholders across the supply chain. These touchpoints will help pinpoint specific leadership challenges and barriers to leadership uptake within the horticulture sector.
Key activities will include:
- Online review of current and previous leadership investments and relevant literature.
- Capability needs analysis to map existing leadership skills and identify gaps.
- Development of the Capability Based Horticulture Leadership Strategy, outlining tailored leadership development initiatives.
- Creation of a Leadership Ready Reckoner to guide investment decisions and recommend initiatives with the highest return on investment.
Benefit
By implementing a capability-based horticulture leadership strategy, the project will help cultivate greater awareness, engagement, and enthusiasm for leadership development across the horticulture sector. It will foster a pipeline of skilled leaders, ensuring the industry remains adaptable, competitive, and well-equipped to face future challenges.
