What was it all about?

This project delivered a detailed understanding of the export supply chain between Australia and India, helping growers, exporters and industry partners identify opportunities to improve the movement of Australian fruit, vegetables and nuts into the Indian market.

The project team mapped every stage of the export journey, from production and packaging in Australia through to import, distribution and retail sale in India. Activities included industry consultation, site visits across three Indian cities, supply chain observations, market analysis and engagement with a 22-member Project Reference Group. The project also assessed consumer channels, logistics performance, cold chain capability, competitor activity and pricing dynamics, and developed practical guidance for exporters, including a case study on table grape exports. An industry delegation tour in 2025 provided Australian representatives with firsthand insights into India's consumer channels and supply chain operations.

The work addressed ongoing challenges facing Australian horticulture exporters seeking to access growing demand in India. While trade settings have improved market access, businesses continue to face barriers such as packaging requirements, customs processes, freight timelines, product handling and coordination across multiple supply chain partners. These issues can affect product quality, increase delays and reduce export efficiency.

The project's findings will help industry make more informed export decisions, strengthen commercial and supply chain planning, and build stronger in-market partnerships. By improving packaging suitability, aligning market channels with operational requirements, and better managing freight, customs and logistics processes, growers and exporters will be better positioned to maintain product quality, reduce losses and improve customer satisfaction. 

The work will also support a more coordinated and consistent Australian horticulture presence in India, increasing confidence and commercial opportunities in this important export market.
