Australia's top 10 trade commodities – Macadamias
The industry has expanded significantly over the past four years from 19,000 hectares of macadamia tree plantings in 2017 to present plantings of approximately 33,000 hectares. The macadamia industry in Australia is primarily located along the east coast, stretching from the mid-north coast of New South Wales to Atherton Tablelands in Queensland, with the greatest growth in and around the Bundaberg region of Queensland.
There are around 800 macadamia growers in Australia contributing to around 50,000 tonnes produced annually. From this 75 per cent of the Australian crop is exported, leading to a strong and consistent supply for importers overseas.
Macadamias have a long history, evolving in the rainforests of Australia over 60 million years ago. They are esteemed for their health benefits, delicious flavor, and cultural significance, making them an integral part of the Australian identity and a source of pride for the nation.
