Australia's top 10 trade commodities – Summerfruit
Australia's summerfruit industry, encompassing peaches, nectarines, apricots and plums, is becoming increasingly export oriented, driven by demand from Asian and Middle Eastern markets.
Proximity to Asia allows for lower freight costs and quicker access to fresh markets, enhancing the appeal of Australian summerfruit. Additionally, counter seasonal availability increases demand in Asian markets. In 2021, exports were valued over $92 million, with close to 21,000 tonnes exported, representing nearly 17% of total production volume.
Summerfruit is produced in approximately 26 regions across Australia and is available from October to April each year. Enriched with essential vitamins A, C, and E, along with dietary fiber and potassium, Australian peaches, nectarines, plums, and apricots are renowned for their quality, thanks to advanced horticultural practices and dedicated growers. The warm climate and hot, dry summers in Australia result in sweeter, juicier summer stonefruit.
