This project will investigate how naturally occurring biological control agents can contribute to integrated pest management strategies for flatid planthoppers.
Flatid planthoppers are an emerging pest threat to the Australian lychee industry. With key chemical control options becoming less available, growers need alternative approaches that support effective pest management.
Researchers will examine current grower practices and orchard conditions, and investigate the factors associated with high rates of parasitism by the parasitoid wasps Dryinus australianus and Neodryinus koebelei. This work will also bring together existing knowledge on flatid planthopper management, identify key knowledge gaps, and assess opportunities to improve management across the industry.
Findings will be used to develop practical resources for growers, including guidance on planthopper management and activities that address key knowledge gaps. The project will help build industry understanding of flatid planthopper impacts and provide information that supports future pest management decisions.
