Regulatory support and coordination (pesticides) (MT20007)

What was it all about?

This project ensured that Hort Innovation and related industries were well-informed about regulatory activities that could affect access to plant protection products, both within Australia and internationally.

By closely monitoring both domestic and international regulatory activities, the project successfully identified potential risks and the implications of proposed regulatory actions. This critical information was then shared with key stakeholders in the horticultural industry. As a result, growers and industry leaders were empowered to make informed decisions, formulate effective response strategies, and make prudent investment choices. This proactive approach helped them avoid pest management gaps in the event of approval removals and allowed them to adjust their crop protection strategies accordingly, thereby mitigating the impact of regulatory changes.

Challenge

The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) and international regulators are re-evaluating older pesticides to ensure they comply with current standards. Many of these older chemicals were originally assessed under outdated standards, putting them at risk of being banned or restricted if they fail to meet today’s stringent requirements.

Given the complexity and ongoing nature of these evaluations, it is crucial for industries to stay informed about regulatory changes that could affect their access to essential pesticides.

Response

This project actively collaborated with registrants, regulators and industry groups to monitor and share information about pesticides under re-evaluation or nominated for re-evaluation, both in Australia and internationally. By identifying those at risk, the project highlighted critical issues that could impact growers’ access to these essential chemicals

Regular updates were provided to the industry through biannual Regulatory Risk Assessments and quarterly AgChemical Updates. These updates ensured that growers and stakeholders had the timely information needed to respond effectively.

Benefit

By engaging with industry groups, the project has effectively informed decision-makers about regulatory threats to pesticides. This critical information has been shared through industry SARPs (Strategic Agrichemical Review Processes), where solutions to emerging pest management gaps have been discussed. Additionally, the project has supported the preparation of submissions to the APVMA and other government bodies, ensuring the industry’s voice is heard in pesticide reviews and policy changes.

Overall, the project has increased awareness among growers and industry stakeholders about upcoming pesticide regulations that may impact on grower ability to access and use needed pesticides. This has given them the opportunity to understand the potential impacts and develop strategies to minimise risks or adverse outcomes. It has also enabled the industry to make strategic decisions about future investments in crop protection technologies
